When conflict erupted along the Thailand–Cambodia border in December 2025, more than 640,000 people were forced to flee from their homes. While many have returned since the ceasefire, more than 127,000 — including women, children, and elderly residents — continue to live in makeshift camps across several border provinces.
Their Name Is Piehsak (“ភៀសសឹក”) is a photographic project by Belgian photojournalist John Vink that documents the lives of people displaced by the conflict. The series focuses on moments of resilience and quiet humanity, while also raising funds for ongoing relief efforts, with particular attention to the elderly.
Join us for an evening of photography, dialogue, and reflection on displacement and humanitarian action. John Vink will share insights from his work along the Thailand–Cambodia border, as well as from other refugee and displacement crises around the world. The event offers an opportunity to engage directly with the photographer and to consider how storytelling, memory, and dignity can inform humanitarian action.
Guests will also have the opportunity to support relief efforts through the purchase of book (limited edition, 500 copies only) and photographs (14 single-edition, framed, signed).
About John Vink
John Vink has spent more than three decades documenting refugee, migrant, and displacement crises in 25 countries, including Cambodia, Thailand, Malawi, Turkey, Pakistan, and more. His work combines journalistic rigor with a sustained commitment to the communities he photographs.
Between 1987 and 1993, he produced Réfugiés (1994), a major study of refugee and displacement camps worldwide, including Cambodia in 1989. He became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1997 and later published Peuples d’en Haut (2004), documenting culturally rich communities in mountainous regions. While living in Cambodia from 1999 to 2016, he produced Avoir 20 Ans à Phnom Penh (2000) and Poids Mouche (2006), both of which offer an intimate portrait of Cambodian society and culture.
